Osmo Mobile 3 review || Tech Review Pro

It is no secret to anyone that the smartphone became not only the entry point to the connected world of many low-income families and, for some a little more well-off and practical, the portable recording studio both at the amateur level and for others more " pro".

Thus, although smartphones have significantly improved the stabilization level at the time of recording video, when the activity lasts (5 or more minutes) and the phone has a screen of 6 ″ or more, it is inevitable that the wrong call “Maraquero pulse” appears on the scene generating slight movements in the recorded scene.

To avoid such situations, experts recommend carrying a tripod but (and this is a great but), when capturing a moving subject and/or having to move to or in the opposite direction to it, unless you Have a good recording crane on hand (something not very feasible in most Vloggers), no tripod worth it! For the same reason, a good “Gimbal” or “3-axis stabilizer” can literally work magic to generate the fluid movement that is needed during recording.

With a stabilizer like the Osmo Mobile 3 from DJI, it is possible to achieve shots with an interval between 0.5-60 seconds, lasting from 1 minute to 5 hours and with movement between 4 different points without having to do anything other than embed the Gimbal on a tripod and set it to taste.

In addition to Timelapse and Hyperlapse, when using the DJI Mimo App with Osmo Mobile 3, it is possible to:

  • Set up gestures to start recording remotely (very useful option for recording alone in the days of # COVID19 where distancing is a social norm),
  • Take photos and/or record stable video effortlessly and turn it into quick stories using the “MyStory” option
  • Generate slow-motion videos,
  • Configure "active tracking" of an object or subject,
  • Take panoramic shots of up to 240 degrees composed of 3 or 9 photos, where practically the Osmo does everything for you! You just have to keep it static during the process or put it on the tripod.

It is worth clarifying that, you have to mess around to learn how to get the most out of the Osmo Mobile 3 since the handling of some controls of the physical interface is often not so intuitive. For example:

  • Double click on the button with the letter “M” to change the orientation of the smartphone from vertical to horizontal,
  • Double-click the "trigger" located on the back to return to the starting point of the interaction,
  • Long click on said "trigger" button to enter the "sport" mode that keeps the smartphone in the same position whether you run or jump,
  • The joystick to rotate the device in the X, Y or Z axis,
  • Operate the Zoom controlled by a kind of slide control located on the side of the device, which can be maneuvered with the fingers of the same hand that holds the stabilizer,
  • The USB input located on the right side is to keep the smartphone charged while being embedded in the device. In cases where it is the Osmo Mobile 3 that is running out of battery, it is possible to use the USB-C bay to charge it.
  • Triple-click on this button with the letter "M" so that the Osmo Mobile 3 stays in the "StandBy" mode and can use the smartphone momentarily.

A flirty detail about DJI Mimo on the AppGallery

Exploring AppGalley on the Huawei P40 Pro, we found new options for the DJI Mimo App (which have not yet reached the Colombian Play Store) such as:

  • Slow-motion,
  • Video Bokeh,
  • HDR Video.

Conclusion on the Osmo Mobile 3?

As a first step, it is worth clarifying that it is not for everyone. Thus, the users of smartphones that record videos occasionally are not going to get the most out of a gadget like the Osmo Mobile 3.
